UFI Global Economic Crisis Barometer
UFI has just released the findings of its 3rd Global Economic Crisis Barometer Survey of the Exhibition Industry
Results of this quarterly survey were previously released in February (1st edition of the UFI Economic Crisis Barometer of the Exhibition Industry) and May 2009 (2nd edition of the UFI Economic Crisis Barometer). Each survey includes an assessment of business fluctuations prior to 2009 and forecasts of business recovery expectations. The third edition of this survey includes replies collected from UFI’s members, the leaders of the exhibition world in 83 countries, the North American members of SISO, the Society of Independent Show Organizers and the Central & South American members of AFIDA Asociacion International de Ferias de America.
The results of the third survey, conducted in July were released late August. They include trends drawing on the results of the previous surveys wherever possible. The findings confirm that the majority of the exhibition industry has been impacted by the economic downturn. This may be attributable to the very nature of the exhibition business which was slower to feel the impact of the recession and may be slower to come out of it. However, the current economic situation now appears to be taking its recessionary course with less fervour and signs of “bottoming-out” exist in several regions.

The Current Sanitary Context
Influenza A(H1N1)
The World Health Organization reports that virus A(H1N1) is a new influenza virus that has never before circulated among humans. This virus is not related to previous or current human seasonal influenza viruses. Moreover, it is a virus to which most people have no or little immunity and, therefore, one that could cause more infections than are seen with seasonal flu.
The virus is spread from person-to-person. It is transmitted as easily as the normal seasonal flu and can be passed to other people by exposure to infected droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing that can be inhaled, or that can contaminate hands or surfaces.
At this time, WHO consider the overall severity of the influenza pandemic to be moderate. However, this can change with time and differ by location or by population. WHO has not recommended the implementation of social distancing policies or imposed travel restrictions. Nor has it recommended the wearing of masks for those who are not ill, or restricted the eating of pork. It has, however, strongly endorsed the common-sense application of some very basic health and hygiene measures.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
- “…There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.”

CDC Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to the 2009–2010 Influenza Season, Atlanta, USA
This guidance is designed to help employers plan for and respond to two possible conditions:
1) a continuation of the current level of severity of influenza as was observed during the [Northern hemisphere] spring and summer of 2009 and
2) a more severe outbreak.

UFI information
H1N1 takes its course: awareness, open communications and basic hygiene are key, UFI Info , September 2009, page 6
Exhibitions are a face-to-face business and will obviously be among the first affected by any national decisions calling for social distancing. To date, the outbreak has not required any such measures. It is up to the exhibition community to implement WHO recommendations and adopt a “business as usual” approach until called upon to act otherwise.
